Casey started her career in dogs in 1980 with a Golden Retriever that she did Obedience with. She then added a Flatcoated Retriever and began showing in Conformation. Flatcoats quickly became our breed and we actively promoted them in both Conformation and Obedience. Daughter Jenny helped in the Conformation ring and also exhibited in Junior Handling. Daughter Crystal showed her Flatcoat Sheba in Obedience, with class placements on each leg, including a first place to finish her CD.
Crystal became taken with Papillons at a young age. We took our time to learn about this breed to see if it was one we could live with In 1992, Crystal got her wish and we got our first Papillon. She showed Tigger in Junior Handling and Obedience, and got two legs on his Obedience CD. Jenny quickly followed by getting her own Papillon. She showed Oliver to his AKC Championship, and also got two legs on his Obedience CD. Needless to say, we quickly got hooked on this adorable little breed and added several more to the family over the years.

During this time frame, we gradually got out of Flatcoats and Casey taught Obedience classes for The City of Yakima Parks Department. Several years later, son Michael comes along and upholds the family tradition by showing dogs when he is old enough. He has competed successfully in both Junior Handling and the breed ring with his Papillons Dickens and Snoopy.
In 1995 and 1997, the girls graduated high school, headed off to college, and moved away from home. Crystal got married in 2002, and gave us two delightful grandchildren. Jenny became a licensed Veterinary Technician and added a Silky Terrier to her life. Once Casey became acquainted with the Silky breed, she fell in love with them too, and here we are today with several of them. Michael, age 16, has his first job working as a Technician Assistant at the 24 hour emergency vet clinic in our area. He really loves the work. Will he want to become a vet when he “grows up”? Only time will tell.
We now have Silky Terriers, Papillons and one loveable Flatcoated Retriever. Michael stays at home to care for the dogs while Casey and Greg go to dog shows. Jenny still gets to some shows, and is excited to start showing her young Silky Terrier, PJ. Jenny works for our Veterinarian, and Crystal is in charge of our website design and maintenance. Twenty six years after our first start, it is still a family affair.
Casey would like to add that this page would not be complete if she did not acknowledge the contribution that Greg makes to her hobby of showing dogs. While Greg does not show the dogs himself, she could not do this without him. All she has to do is tell him where he needs to go and when they need to be there, and he gets to the shows in plenty of time. He loads and unloads the van, sets up and takes down the grooming spot and hauls the dogs to ringside and back again. He holds dogs (including ones belonging to friends that set up with them), takes pictures, changes armbands, marks the catalog (correctly) and is just a do-it-all-kind of guy. (His most important job, however, is keeping that part straight down the back of whatever Silky she is showing that day!) Greg does all of this at every show with a smile. There is no question that he is the kind of husband many a dog show wife wishes they had. |
