Websites are a wonderful thing. They allow us, the breeder, to share with the world what we have and what we do with our dogs. Unfortunately there is no “truth police” that oversees what people write on their websites. Many websites make claims of having all their dogs clear of any genetic issues for their breed, but can they back it up? It is easy to say that a dog is clear for various tests, and so often the potential puppy buyer just accepts it at face value. Don’t allow yourself to be fooled by fancy claims and pretty pictures.

Don’t be afraid to ask for proof of health clearances. Responsible and reputable breeders most likely will offer to show you the proof before you ask, but if they forget, you should ask. And don’t be fooled by the statement of “my own vet can check such and such and my dogs are all fine.” There are specific tests for each breed and specific organizations that maintain databases for that information. Dogs that have passed the tests for their breed will be issued a number from that organization and have a certificate to back it up. Sometimes a breeder has the testing done but may not have submitted it to the organization that maintains that information. The breeder would or should still have the form that the vet doing the testing completed and can show you that. If they are not willing to back up their claims with some type of logical proof, you might want to think twice about buying a dog from them.
If you are buying a puppy it may be too young yet to have its own health clearances, or not have all of them. The puppy’s parents should however have those clearances that are required for the specific breed. When a Karisma puppy goes to its new home, a puppy packet that includes copies of the health clearances on his or her parents goes with it.
If you are interested in verifying health clearances, you can click on the two links above. The CERF link will take you to eye clearances and the OFA link will take you to the clearances for patellas and other bone/joint related health issues.
